About Emoyeni

 Emoyeni Retreat Centre is situated on the northern slopes of the Magaliesberg mountains - in North West province, South Africa, about 100 km northwest of Johannesburg.

Emoyeni is a Zulu name meaning "Place of the Spirit". Functioning under the auspices of the Emoyeni Trust we are a registered nonprofit organisation. The operation of Emoyeni Retreat Centre is broadly based on Buddhist principles and meditation techniques. Our approach includes the practice of mindfulness and an attitude of non-harming towards all living beings. We welcome anyone, Buddhist and non-Buddhist alike, who has a sincere interest in cultivating wisdom and compassion as a way of life. Our aim is to provide an atmosphere of peace and tranquillity, within an environment of natural beauty, which is conducive to the practice of meditation, a safe space where the weary can find a moment of rest and peace, away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Our accommodation and other facilities are simple and basic, with the emphasis on functionality rather than luxury. In order to encourage introspection and inquiry, no facilities in the form of swimming pools, games, television, etc. are provided. We regularly offer conducted retreats, details of which can be found on the retreats page. Individual or self-retreats can be done anytime, for any duration according to personal needs.  We also offer work retreats where work can be done in return for accommodation.

Existing buildings on the property have been renovated to provide accommodation for 14 guests (with extra tent space) and 6 residents. Our meditation hall, a lovely stone & thatch building, can comfortably seat about 25 people.Three lacto-vegetarian meals are provided dayly, and linen is also supplied. Especially for conducted retreats It is advisable to book in advance.

 You are welcome to visit Emoyeni at any time, for a day visit, a weekend or for a longer stay. Day visitors - please do call first to let us know that you will be coming.
